Wattum Bitcoin Mining Hosting review – Dec 2021 launch

My Wattum miners from my first order have finally been delivered and connected. In this Wattum Bitcoin mining hosting review I will go through my experience with Wattum and discuss the pros and cons I see, especially vs Zionodes since that’s where my other miners are hosted.

UPDATE: My experience after 3 months has just been published

Wattum Avalon 1246 Order Summary

I wrote in details about my order and though process on this in the first Wattum article. So here is just a summary of what happened:

  • I needed miners to be live by end of December 2021 for tax purposes
  • Compass mining, Blockware solutions and Frontier mining didn’t have any availability
  • Compass said they will be launching marketplace soon, so I should not have issues getting miners there before end of 2021. Thankfully I did not have to rely on this. The Compass mining markeplace prices are crazy
  • Wattum had Avalon 1246 85TH available for December 15th launch
  • Wattum also had S19 100TH available for December 30th launch
  • I purchased 10 x Avalon 1246 85TH for $9,582 each
  • Hosting for $0.075 KW/h in Russia
  • I crossed my fingers and hoped that they will really arrive on time
  • Received email on November 23rd that miners already arrived at hosting facility and are being inspected

What happened after the mining units arrived at Wattum hosting facility

After the units arrived in Wattum hosting facility, I was told pictures of the miners will be taken. Although the support never specifically said that they will send the pictures to me as well, I was hoping to receive them. Well that never happened. However they confirmed that my planned connection date is still on December 15th, before 5PM EST. Wattum team sent me their affiliate link to sign up for ViaBTC pool and send them my username.

I already had ViaBTC account (sorry Wattum, no affiliate commission on this one) for my Zionodes miners. What I really like about ViaBTC pool is the possibility to create sub-usernames on your main account. That way I can keep separate monitoring for my Zionodes miners and for my Wattum miners. I created a sub-username and sent back.

On December 15th, I was checking my ViaBTC pool account every hour. Hoping that my miners will be connected maybe little sooner than 3PM EST. They had them in their facility for over 3 weeks now, so they should be ready. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. At 3:04 PM, I still didn’t see any activity on my pool account. So I emailed Wattum support asking whether my connection date is still on December 15th. This was my first communication with them since I sent them my username 3 weeks ago.

The Wattum customer support never replied to my email, but when I checked my ViaBTC account around 3:20PM EST, I started to see activity and all the 10 Avalon 1246 successfully mining.

I read through several Wattum mining reviews and Compass mining reviews before, and so I know the industry is full of delays. The fact that they received my Avalons already in November was good news. But I was still little worried that it will not be smooth launch and that there will be delays. Fortunately it wasn’t the case this time. With this launch I managed to fulfil my goal of investing around $200k into Bitcoin miners with live date in 2021.

Wattum mining customer support review

I got mixed feelings about the customer support from Wattum Management. My sales rep Ishan, who guided me through the buying process, was excellent. He was like a robot – replying to my emails within minutes, answering all my questions. Anything I threw at him, he was able to explain. I had a lot of questions about the pricing, availability, the contract they had me sign, etc…He was really great. He was even helpful after I already paid for my miners, and still had other questions – so he did not disappear after they got my money.

From a regular customer support point of view however I did not see so much pro-active approach. Usually they would reply to my emails fairly quick – within 1 or 2 business days. So that is OK. But I never got any communication when my miners were connected – no reply to my email asking about it on December 15th. I had to check my ViaBTC several times to find out that I am actually mining already. It would be nice to get a notification about deployment.

I got a reply the day after, on December 16th (today). In this email they informed me that my miners have been connected on December 15th. And that I will receive a link to a folder which will contain my unit information. I should be receiving a monthly report too.

Wattum mining account management

Account management options is one of the biggest negatives with Wattum. With Zionodes or Compass Mining, you create an account where you can login and see your miners, your purchases, your hosting costs etc. Zionodes account shows when is my next hosting bill due and how much it is going to be. Wattum mining does not have any account management tool like this. There is no account to be created at all. The only way I know I have any miners with them is my ViaBTC pool account.

I pre-paid hosting for 1 month. But the only way I find this out is to go and search for my original purchase invoice. It would be great to have an account to login and see summary of my purchases, hosting info and any other information about my purchase. If I wanted to change payment method for my hosting services, I would probably have to reach out to customer support and actually email them my CC number. Definitely not the safest way to do this. Wattum should implement a centralized account management tool, where I can login and see all my settings, invoices, payment methods and any other account details.

Avalon 1246 miners performance – first 24 hours

It has been 24 hours since the miners have been connected. So far everything looks really good. The miners are hashing at advertised rate of 85 TH/s. My 1hr average right now is 851 TH/s and 1 day average is 850 TH/s.

On an individual miner level I am seeing little more volatility in performance than with my S19 95 TH/s, especially in the 10-min average hash rates. But those values are not important for ROI of this purchase. The value I am looking at is 24 hr average, and that is around 85 TH/s for all my Avalon 1246 miners

So far the first 24 hours are looking really good. Avalon miners should be less reliable than Bitmain S19 from a long term point of view. However the newer Avalon 1246 should be more reliable than some of the older models. Only time will tell whether mine are from a lucky batch or not, and how many issues I will have down the road.

Wattum Bitcoin mining hosting review summary

It has been only a day since my miners were deployed. So I will not yet make any conclusions on the customer support that Wattum provides. I am sure there will be issues that I will need to be solved in the future, and that is when I will be really able to evaluate the support quality. For now, I am satisfied with this purchase. Deployment time was one of my main priorities and Wattum managed to deliver everything on time. The prices were also acceptable considering the current market situation. I will keep updating this report and writing about my future experience.

  • Better miners availability than competition
  • OK-ish prices considering the current demand and environment
  • Great sales support
  • On-time deployment
  • Higher hosting prices than some competition
  • No account management tool
